An 18-year-old A-level student from Warrington has had the chance to experience life in Westminster thanks to a helping hand from the Leigh MP, Andy Burnham.
Grace Collier, who studies at Winstanley College in Wigan, first met Andy when she arranged for him to come into college and speak to students about his campaign to become the next Mayor of Manchester. During his visit, Grace got the chance to chat to him about her hopes to develop a career in politics.
Impressed by her enthusiasm, Andy offered Grace, who is also president of the college’s debating society, the chance to shadow him in some of his work over the coming months. Excitingly, this included a trip to the Houses of Parliament to watch Prime Minister’s Questions, where she also saw Andy interviewed for Channel 4 and Sky News channel.
An inspired Grace said: ‘Going to Westminster was such an amazing experience, it has confirmed that a career in politics is definitely what I want to do. Andy has been so helpful, he showed me how he prepares for interviews based on what has been discussed in Parliament and explained everything that was happening very clearly. The fact that he said he could see potential in me has made me more determined to pursue politics and I will be able to shadow Andy until I leave college which is an opportunity not many people get.’
