Over 100 audience members have attended the first few Debating Society debates to watch the 18 competitors battle it out to be crowned winner of the tournament.
All 18 competitors must take part in 2 debates, fighting for the chance to compete in the final in November.
During the tournament, students have/will debate: Donald Trump’s presidency, women’s rights, animal testing, organ donations, nuclear proliferation, the UK’s international aid budget, and Third Wave feminism.
Overseeing the debates is President of the Society, Rebecca Leech, who also helps to shape the topics throughout the year, along with the committee.
The group meets at 1.30pm on Tuesdays, and as well as the debating tournament, external speakers also visit. This year speakers have/will include: Unlock Democracy, Life Charity and the Taxpayers’ Alliance.
Another bonus of being a Debating Society member is the chance to take part in events such as: National Model United Nations Conference in Birmingham, International Model United Nations in Germany, the Cambridge University Union Debate Competition and the Institute for Ideas ‘Debating Matters’ competition.
Good luck to all the competitors and thank you to all the members of the Society who make it the success it is.
