Winstanley College student Harley Beentjes has returned home from the ISF World Schools Games with TWO silver medals!
Harley, who continues to train with Wigan Borough Elite Swim Team (Wigan BEST), took silver in both the 4×100 Freestyle Relay and 4×100 Mixed Relay events.
No stranger to elite competition, the former St. Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School pupil has previously competed at the British Championships and even qualified for the Commonwealth Trials alongside Olympic medallists and world record holders. He was selected to represent his country following an outstanding performance for the North West Region at the English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA) National Finals in London.
Clearly delighted by his achievements, Harley said: “I couldn’t believe it to be honest. It was a really big deal just to make the England team for the first time; to actually come away with two medals is fantastic”.
Harley was also quick to thank Winstanley College for the support he has received and for allowing him time away from college despite his exams starting just two weeks after the games!
Going forward, Harley has decided to study Graphic Design at Edinburgh University, a renowned centre of excellence for competitive swimming. He is also looking forward to more international trips with his teammates following his “unbelievable” experiences in Morocco. Harley’s long term goal is to one day swim for Team GB.
Congratulations Harley on a truly outstanding achievement!
