An incredible 31 Winstanley College students have received Oxbridge offers for September 2021. Seventeen have offers for Oxford University and 14 have offers for Cambridge University.
This is the highest number of offers ever received by Winstanley students and almost all of the applicants came to Winstanley from state schools in and around the borough.
Emily Hill, is one of 4 former Byrchall High School pupils holding an Oxbridge offer. Emily’s is for Architecture at Kings College Cambridge. She commented: ‘Being able to run through my application in a mock interview at college was incredibly helpful, as I was so nervous for this part of the process. I was shocked to receive an offer, let alone an offer from the college that I find most architecturally inspiring, which is obviously a huge plus given my course. I would love to develop my own style of design for residential buildings, in the hope that I could create a successful firm or business in the industry’.
One of the 17 students with an Oxford offer is former St Peter’s Catholic High pupil, Simon Tingle, who has an offer for Mathematics at St Anne’s College. Simon said: When I found out I got an offer for Oxford I was slightly surprised but very grateful, as it meant that I passed the stringent Oxford admissions criteria. It reflected my hard work over the past few months and made me feel incredibly justified. It also opened up doors to an entire community of other brilliant minds who have also received Oxford offers, and since my offer I have had many interesting conversations about extremely complex maths. It completely invigorated me in my studies and I am very excited and optimistic about the future.’
Louise Tipping, Winstanley College Principal, said: ‘We are thrilled that for the third year running, we have broken the record for the number of Winstanley students being offered Oxbridge places. The diverse range of offers, including medicine, languages and law to name just a few, are testament to the varying talents and interests of our students.
It’s encouraging to see nationally the increasing number of state school students being given the chance to study at these prestigious institutions. We work closely with local high schools to promote progression to higher education and to ensure that students from postcodes with traditionally low rates of progression are given extra support and encouragement.’
She continued, ‘We did of course have outstanding students who were unsuccessful in their Oxbridge applications, but I’m pleased to see that they’ve all now received offers from other top universities. We have a comprehensive Oxbridge preparation programme, run by experienced staff and I know the students will join me in thanking them for their unwavering support despite the disruptions Covid 19 has caused to the process.’
Matt Fisher, who co-ordinates Winstanley College’s Oxbridge Programme added “We’re incredibly proud that an astonishing 31 Winstanley students who came to us from 20 different high schools are realising their potential to progress to study at Oxford and Cambridge! These students have the ambition, confidence and ability to flourish at the best universities in the UK.’
