AS CG1 This unit is based on the knowledge and understanding of hardware, software, system development and applications. It involves acquiring a knowledge of computer architecture, communications, organisation and structure of data, programming theory and use of software. It also involves the study of a number of applications of computers in the modern world, including the Internet, and the economic and social consequences of the use of computers.   Externally assessed written examination   32.5%
AS CG2 The main objective of this unit is the analysis, design, software development, documentation, testing and development of a system leading to a solution to a given problem. This unit requires the production of original code (programming), either as a self-contained program or in conjunction with an application package. The documentation must be word processed.   Internally assessed task   17.5%
A2 CG3 This unit assumes a knowledge of units CG1 and CG2, and is based on the acquisition of further knowledge and understanding of hardware, software, system development and applications. It includes web page design, operating systems, computer logic, databases, algorithm design and software engineering. Externally assessed written examination   32.5%
A2 CG4 This unit requires the analysis, design, implementation, testing and evaluation of a computer solution to a substantial problem of a student’s own choice. This problem should be a real (not hypothetical) one and the solution should be documented.  This unit again requires the production of original code (programming), either as a self-contained program or in conjunction with an application package. Again, the documentation must be word processed. Internally assessed project
