AS Foundation Geology   The foundation geology is divided into three scientific topic areas. These develop a basic geological knowledge, understanding and skills to underpin the other units of the course. It also introduces the geological skills of observation and the interpretation of simple geological problem maps and specimens. This provides ideas for investigative fieldwork and research and opportunities for both outdoor fieldwork and virtual fieldwork in the classroom. Such topics include:
  • Earthquakes and their interpretation
  • An understanding of volcanoes and tectonic forces
  • Processes, rock types and their resultant features
  • Geological changes and their interpretation
17.5%   Structured data response questions
AS Investigative geology
A practical exercise
Students are able to use their investigative skills (both fieldwork and laboratory) to complete a practical exercise based on a simplified geological map, photographs and other data.   15% internal assessment
AS Geology and the Human Environment This unit develops ;
  • A knowledge and understanding of natural geological hazards and those caused by human activity and the means of predicting, monitoring and controlling them. Example; Montserrat 1990’s to present; Beachy Head landslides, 1999; Indian ocean earthquake and tsunamis, 2004.
  • An evaluation of the impact of geology in environmental planning and civil engineering projects. Example; the Vaiont Dam collapse
  • Skills of analysing and evaluating geological data related to site development and hazard assessment. Example; assessing the success of sea defence schemes at Arromanches.
17.5% written paper   Structured data response and one essay
A2 Interpreting the Geological Record A variety of themes and concepts are studied, such as; climate change through geological time and the evidence for this in the rock and fossil record magma formation and evolution and the different types of rocks produced, from Hawaiian mid plate plume volcanoes to the volcanoes in the Andean mountains map interpretation skills 17.5% written paper
A2 Geological Themes These themes build on topics studied at AS such as “geology and the human environment”   They introduce a variety of new ideas, techniques and skills from those associated with hydrogeology and groundwater issues to varying rates of sea floor spreading and plate tectonics       17.5% written paper   Structured data response and one essay
A2 Geological Investigations A fieldwork and/ laboratory based investigation. A minimum of 6 days fieldwork throughout the two year course will provide ideas and data for this piece of fieldwork. 15% internal assessment
