Module Module Content Assessment and weighting
AS THE ENGLISH LEGAL SYSTEM This involves students gaining an understanding of the civil & criminal courts, the powers of the police & the penal system. This will be helped by court visits & guest speakers from prison officers. There is also a detailed look at sentencing procedure. Students will also examine the role of the people within the legal system, the legal profession, judges, lay people (magistrates & jurors) & the finance of the administration of justice   Written exam 30%
AS SOURCES OF LAW This involves students in an exploration of law-making through the institutions which create legislation i.e the EU, Parliament & delegated legislation. The role of the judiciary in making law through precedent will also be investigated. Written exam   20%
A2 CRIMINAL LAW Here we take an in-depth look at fatal & non-fatal offences against the person. You will explore the law on murder & manslaughter & discover how to apply it to factual scenarios You will also be looking at how the offences against property: theft, robbery & burglary are committed together with any relevant defences for all the above offences.   Written exam   30%
A2 CRIMINAL LAW SPECIAL STUDY PAPER Students receive a special study booklet containing source material on one area of criminal law that they have studied. They are then expected to draw on their knowledge & understanding from the rest of the syllabus to explore this particular area in depth.   Written exam   20%
