Module Module Content Assessment and weighting
AS Foundation Portfolio in Media This is a coursework module where students produce two paired media products from a series of briefs. The briefs are : print, video, audio and website. Students must show progression from a preliminary exercise e.g. filming and editing a sequence to show understanding of the principles of continuity editing to a more fully realised project such as the production of titles and opening sequence for a new fiction film lasting two minutes approx. The same approach from preliminary exercise to more ambitious finished product also applies to print (e.g. magazine or advertising production), radio (news bulletin, breakfast show etc.) and website design (e.g. charity website, music website etc.) Internally Assessed and Externally moderated coursework (50% AS) (25% A2)
AS Key Media Concepts – study one from a choice of two : either TV Drama or Radio Drama Two compulsory questions – one for each section : Section A : Textual Analysis and Representation Section B : Audiences and Institutions The first half of the exam involves the playing of a five minute extract from either TV Drama or Radio Drama followed by a question on how it is constructed (e.g. camera angles, use of music & sound effects, editing etc.) followed by… …a second question based on a case study on one of the following media industries – film, music, newspapers, radio, magazines, video games. A2 Advanced Portfolio in Media This is a coursework module where students use contemporary media technologies to produce a portfolio through a combination of two or more media and then present their research, planning and evaluation in two or more forms e.g. a short film lasting approx. five minutes together with two of the following three options : a poster for the film, a radio trailer for the film, a film magazine review page featuring the film. Research, planning and evaluation does not have to be written – in can the take the form of a podcast, a Powerpoint presentation, a blog or website or even a DVD extras format. There are a wide variety of briefs covering different combinations of media products and technologies. Internally Assessed and Externally Moderated Coursework 25%
A2 Critical Perspectives in Media Two compulsory questions in two hours : Section A : Theoretical Evaluation of Students’ Own Production Work – students have to write about their own production experience and the skills they have developed and evaluate their work in relation to a media concept e.g. Genre, Narrative, Audience etc. Section B : Contemporary Media Issues – study of one of the following topic areas : Media Regulation, Global Media, Media and Collective Identity, media in the Online Age, ‘We Media’ and Democracy Written Examination (Two
