Module Module Content Assessment and weighting
AS Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology and Research Methods. In this unit, students will develop knowledge and understanding of concepts, theories and studies in relation to cognitive psychology and developmental psychology. Students will also develop knowledge and understanding of research methods and ethical issues associated with these areas of psychology. Students develop their knowledge of research methods through undertaking practical research activities involving collection, analysis and interpretation of qualitative and quantitative data. Externally assessed written examination   25%
AS Biological Psychology, Social Psychology and Individual Differences. This unit requires students to develop knowledge and understanding of concepts, theories and studies in relation to individual differences, social psychology and biological psychology. Students will develop skills of analysis, evaluation and application in relation to these areas. Students will also develop knowledge and understanding of research methods and ethical issues associated with these areas of psychology. Externally assessed written examination   25%

Topics in Psychology

This requires students to develop knowledge, understanding and skills of analysis and evaluation in relation to three topics selected from the following: Biological rhythms and sleep, perception, relationships, aggression, eating behaviour, gender, intelligence and learning and cognition and development. Students will also develop an understanding of the major approaches in psychology (cognitive, biological, behavioural and psychodynamic) and develop an appreciation of issues and debates as relevant to each topic studied: for example, issues of bias, including gender and culture, the role of animals in research, ethical issues, the nature/nurture debate, free will, determinism and reductionism. Externally assessed written examination   25%

Psychopathology, Psychology in Action and Research Methods

Candidates will develop knowledge and understanding of one of the following disorders: schizophrenia, depression or anxiety disorders. Students will also look into classification and diagnosis of the chosen disorder. Candidates will be develop knowledge, understanding and critical thinking in relation to one of the following contemporary applications of psychology: media psychology, addictive behaviour or anomalistic psychology. In the psychological research and scientific method section, candidates will extend their knowledge and skills of research design, data analysis and data interpretation and reporting gained at AS. They will also develop an understanding of the nature of science and scientific method. Externally assessed written examination   25%
