WINSTANLEY COLLEGE ENTRY POLICY 10-11

For September 2010, the College will guarantee a place to all applicants who achieve 56 points and above from their best 8 GCSE results.    All students must have achieved a C grade or above in GCSE English and Maths. 

Places will be allocated on a points score based on the best 8 results or a Higher Diploma and 4 GCSEs in all instances.  With the exception of the new Higher Diplomas, a maximum of 10 points from vocational qualifications can be included in this 56 point total.  Higher Diploma students must achieve at least 28 points from four GCSEs as well as a minimum of a B in their diploma to be guaranteed entry.  Please see overleaf for the detail of how points are awarded.  For non-English qualifications the College will use NARIC equivalencies and QCA adjudications. 

Should the College be able to offer places to students with fewer than 56 points, offers will be made on a declining scale e.g. to those with 54 points, then 52 points etc.

For students who achieve fewer than 56 points, in the event of the points score not being a sufficiently precise discriminator, offers will be made on the basis of

a)    number of A*s
b)    number of As          amongst the best 8 results
c)    number of Bs

If in doubt about the progression value of a specific course, please contact the College’s admissions office at the earliest opportunity. 

APPEALS

Appeals for special consideration will be heard by the Admissions Panel if received before GCSE results are published.  Only in exceptional circumstances is the College able to hear appeals made after GCSE results have been published.  Please note that normally, the College will give preference for its limited places to Year 11 school leavers. 

Requests for special consideration should normally be accompanied by support from the applicant’s school and be made in writing to the Vice Principal, Mel Chadwick. 

ACCEPTANCE FORMS

Unfortunately given the pressure on college places, if you do not return your acceptance form to the College, we regret that you will not be eligible to enrol in August.  We will post an acknowledgement card to you within 5 days of receipt of your acceptance form.  Please contact our Admissions Office (01695 628610) if you have not received an acknowledgement by the end of March.

ENROLMENT

We aim to finalise our admissions procedures by the end of Wednesday 25th August 2010. If you don’t attend your enrolment interview (the date and time for this is stated in your offer letter) we will assume you no longer wish to take up our offer of a place.

If you cannot avoid being away on holiday during the enrolment period (24th and 25th August 2010) you must contact us beforehand to arrange a later enrolment date. You must also arrange for your results, and any proposed change of course, to be sent to the college by 12 noon on Wednesday 25th August 2010.  This can be done by

If you do not provide us with these details by the specified date we will assume you no longer wish to come to Winstanley and you will forfeit your chance of a place.

B or above required in the Higher Diploma (in addition to 28 points from 4 GCSEs)

An AIDA qualification gives students an excellent grounding in ICT but does not count towards the points score for entry. 

The adult literacy and numeracy qualifications commonly known as ALAN do not count towards the points score for entry.
