All colleges offer support to their students in addition to the obvious academic support. This can be provided in a variety of ways. At Winstanley the Personal Tutor system is at the heart of this additional support.
Q: What does it mean for me?
You will
be assigned to your own personal tutor as soon as you arrive at
college. Your Personal Tutor's job is to help you to get the best
possible deal out of college and to make the most of your time at
college.
Q: So, how does this happen?
They will
encourage you to achieve the highest possible grades that you are
capable of, and at least to exceed your ‘Minimum Acceptable Grades’, by
monitoring your progress and attendance and ensuring that, as far as
possible, you are on the right course.
They will support you in the transition from school to college
and then help you to prepare for the future and life after college.
They will encourage you to get involved with college life outside the classroom through the enrichment programme.
Q: When will I meet my Personal Tutor?
Each week there will be a group meeting (about 25 students) with other
students in your year and your Personal Tutor. These sessions are
designed to help you to adapt to life as a student, to develop your
study skills, to research your future plans, to prepare you for general
studies, as well as giving you the chance to chat about the burning
issues of the day.
There is also the chance to see your Personal Tutor
individually during the week, if you have a problem, need some help or
just fancy a gossip.
Q: So, who will my personal tutor be?
He/she will be one of the college staff who works for one of the five
Senior Tutors in college. You should think of him/her as your advocate
i.e. someone who works on your behalf. He/she will be the first point
of contact for any issue that concerns you, academic or otherwise.
