At Winstanley we want everyone to achieve the most they can (see Equal Opportunities Policy). That’s why we have developed Study Support.
WHAT IS STUDY SUPPORT?
The Study Support office at the end of B Corridor is open to everyone. Call in and speak to our tutors or simply go in at breaks to see and pick up our resources. Our resources are also in the LRC, in Student Reception and on the intranet. They are meant for everyone, so please use them! Some students are assigned a study support tutor who they see regularly to help with their work. We also support students who have health problems. This may include many things such as M.E., epilepsy, partial sight and blindness. We give students any extra help or guidance we can with their A levels.
WE CAN HELP YOU
- Get your ideas down on paper, avoid rambling sentences or unclear paragraphs, structure your essays and assignments so that your ideas are clear and easy to follow.
- Have strategies for improving your spelling, acquire tips on good punctuation.
- Explore different techniques for effective revision, ideas to exploit and develop your learning style.
- Investigate ways to improve your time management so that work, particularly coursework, does not get on top of you.
- Learn relaxation and exam techniques so that the stress does not get to you.
WHAT OTHER HELP DO WE PROVIDE?
We can organise:
- Exam concessions for students who need extra time, a note taker or amanuensis.
- Advice and help for students who are dyslexic or dyspraxic.
- Advice for students who have visual and hearing impairment – advice and help for students who have medical problems.
HOW DO I GET STUDY SUPPORT?
- All students are helped by study support through the tutorial programme which includes discussion of your learning styles, time management exercises and discussion of study skills. We identify students who need some extra help in a variety of ways.
- Some students indicate at induction that they have difficulties they need help with.
- All students take their initial assessment of Quickscan which flags up problems we can help with and we contact students directly.
- Students who fall behind in more than one of their A level subjects are referred to study support by their Personal Tutor.
