Winstanley college buildings are amongst the top 1% most efficient of 28,000 public sector buildings listed in England and Wales according to the government. Winstanley is also one of the top 3 three public buildings in Wigan for energy efficiency. It is a credit to all staff including cleaners and IT staff who have ensured that lights air conditioning and computers are turned off at night, as well as setting the heating system so that it only runs when it is needed.
This is part of a college sustainability programme which includes recycling, student projects in the local community. The student conservation group at Winstanley promotes recycling and minimises consumption amongst the college community. There are ongoing projects such as the vegetable patch where we hope to supply the college’s canteen with an organic source of vegetables and herbs. They have also recently put up posters around college and in local takeaways to highlight the problem of littering in the local area.
Our plans to rebuild the college had to be shelved earlier this year, but we hope to be able to improve the insulation, roofing and heating systems of our existing buildings to improve their sustainability still further.
