Learn to Teach with the Learning Futures Partnership
Our mission is to recruit, develop and retain exceptional professionals by offering supportive initial teacher training in primary, secondary and tertiary settings in and around the Wigan area. The Learning Future Partnership (LFP) includes outstanding primary and secondary schools as well as an outstanding sixth form college. They are:- Bedford High School
- Byrchall High School
- Fred Longworth High School
- Hawkley Hall High School
- Marus Bridge Primary School
- Rowan Learning Trust
- Tyldsley Primary School
- Winstanley College
All the schools work in collaboration with the University of Cumbria to offer supportive, caring and inspiring initial teacher training to make sure that you succeed in your choice of career whether that be primary or 11-18 provision.
With the LFP you will be in familiar, local surroundings perhaps even learning to teach in the school you went to! You will gain confidence from really understanding the local area and the backgrounds of the children you’ll be teaching. This sense of place and belonging will give you an extra boost during your trainee year.
You choose which age group to specialise in, if you choose secondary you then choose your subject area and then we make sure you become part of the family. You will develop your expertise through having a placement in two contrasting settings and in taught sessions to enhance your subject and teaching ability. Most of these sessions will be delivered in school but you will also get the opportunity to meet other trainees in your specialism by attending sessions in Lancaster.
Teachers enter the profession for a number of reasons. For example,
‘I love the creativity of the classroom. I didn’t realise though that I’d be learning as well as the pupils!’
‘I wanted to share my enthusiasm for science and hopefully inspire the next generation of curious minds. Who knows what the children of today will accomplish’
‘My home town means a lot to me. That sense of belonging is very important and I wanted to be a positive influence in the place that matters most with the people I understand best’
You may have been inspired by one of your own teachers or you may recognise teaching as a rewarding profession with outstanding career progression for ambitious individuals. Whatever your motivation, you will need to meet certain criteria to apply.
Trainee teachers normally need to have a 2:2 honours degree in a relevant subject. Successful candidates have normally researched their chosen career by volunteering or work shadowing in their chosen setting. If you haven’t as yet been able to do this we may well be able to help you
How do I apply?
As part of the selection procedure, candidates will be requested to take part in a rigorous selection process designed to assess suitability to teach. All applicants applying to start a teacher training course are required to pass literacy and numeracy skills tests prior to entry.
The LFP and University of Cumbria will check all applications. Those applicants meeting the entry criteria will be shortlisted and invited for interview which will involve:
Once all applicants have been interviewed we will match up potentially successful applicants with the allocations available.
Once a list of selected applicants has been finalised, a provisional offer will be made in writing. This offer is provisional until several checks and agreements have been made.
These include:
