Friends Phillip Breen and Laura Barton both attended Winstanley College and have since gone on to have glittering careers.
Phil, after completing his A Levels, went on to study Social and Political Sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge where he directed many student plays including the 2001 Footlights Tour Show ‘Far Too Happy’ which was nominated for the Perrier Comedy Award. Since then he has directed over thirty professional productions, variously winning and being nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy Awards, Fringe Firsts, Critics Association Awards for Theatre in Scotland, Time Out New York “Best of ” Awards, Off Broadway Stonys, Stage Awards and The Holden Street Theatre Award.
Laura, is now a writer, journalist and broadcaster. She writes for The Guardian, The New York Times, Radio 4, Intelligent Life and Q magazine amongst many others. Her first novel, Twenty-One Locks, was published in 2010, and received a Betty Trask Award.
