This week we are catching up with Owen Arands who came to Winstanley between 2015-2017 and now works for Bauer Radio as a reporter.
The former Upholland High School student who studied Media, Physics and Maths, has fond memories of creating a radio new bulletin for his Media coursework which is where he got his passion for radio. After leaving college he attended the University of Leeds to study a BA in Journalism. Whilst he was at university, he gained a work experience placement at Radio City in Liverpool which he enjoyed so much he worked freelance for them during lockdown alongside Signal 1 in Stoke for 6 months.
Bauer were so impressed with the work he performed as a freelance at their radio stations that they offered him a permanent position within the company. His job is now to gather news stories, perform interviews, report at the scene of events and produce content for website and social media.
Owen had this to say about his time at college; ‘Winstanley is just a great place to study, everyone was so supportive and I really miss it so make the most of your time there. In terms of pursuing a career in the media, because of the pandemic most of the work we do is from home so anyone with a passion could do it, so why not write an article or produce a little documentary. Because people are so accessible now, it’s never been easier to produce industry standard work and to achieve a job in your dream career!’
