Throwback Thursday - Jamie Cairns

This week for our Throwback Thursday alumni feature, we catch up with Jamie Cairns, who studied Maths, Chemistry and Computer Science at Winstanley College between 2023 and 2025. After joining us from Byrchall High School, Jamie immersed himself in College life through the Computer Science Cyber Security course and Chemistry Club. He is now studying for a BSc in Environmental Science at the University of Leeds and has recently returned from a seven-week study abroad programme at Akita International University in Japan, where he studied the Japanese language. Looking ahead, Jamie hopes to pursue a career in tornado forecasting in the USA.

Jamie says: "Winstanley opened many doors for me, and I made some lifelong friends while studying there. One of the best things about College was meeting amazing friends who I'm now living with at university. I'd encourage students to branch out, make new friends and get to know their teachers because they genuinely want the best for you. I'd also say it's important to choose subjects that you enjoy and are happy studying.

I'm currently studying Environmental Science at the University of Leeds and recently had the opportunity to spend seven weeks in Japan studying Japanese at Akita International University. It was an incredible experience and gave me the chance to experience a different culture while learning new skills.

My ambition is to work in tornado forecasting in the USA. For anyone considering a similar career path, I'd say go for it. Meteorology is incredibly interesting and perfect if you're fascinated by how weather works. It does involve quite a bit of maths and physics, but they're easier to get your head around than you might think once you start applying them.”

"I'd also highly recommend the University of Leeds. It's a great university with a fantastic student experience, and being relatively close to home means it's easy to travel back when needed."
