At Winstanley College we are celebrating an exceptional achievement following our recent Ofsted inspection, where we were rated ‘Outstanding’ in all areas. This result firmly establishes our College as one of the top Sixth Form Colleges in the country.
Inspectors commended Winstanley as being “one big community,” describing it as a welcoming, inclusive, and caring environment where students feel a strong sense of belonging. They recognised the extensive range of extracurricular activities that help students broaden their knowledge of the world to help them progress confidently to their next destination.
The report highlights the high quality of teaching at the College, noting that teachers present information skilfully, give effective feedback and place a strong emphasis on study skills. As a result, students achieve highly on their A-level and vocational courses, with around two-thirds attaining the highest grades.
Inspectors also praised the outstanding support available for students with special educational needs and/or disabilities, which ensures they perform as well as, if not better than, their peers. The College’s strong partnerships with employers and universities were also commended, as was its effective careers guidance.

The Quality of Education: Outstanding
Ofsted recognised Winstanley College’s exceptionally high-quality education, highlighting the ambitious curriculum and the outstanding achievements of students. Teachers are highly qualified and bring enthusiasm to their subjects, ensuring students develop deep knowledge and skills. The report states: “Teachers frequently check for any knowledge or skills gaps and refer students to additional weekly support lessons, where needed.” This targeted approach helps students to achieve excellent results, with around two-thirds securing top grades.
Personal Development: Outstanding
The College provides a wealth of opportunities to develop students beyond the classroom. The report highlights that “Students particpate frequently in an extensive range of high-quality additional activities,” from clubs and societies to subject-related enrichment. These experiences help students grow into responsible, resilient individuals, ensuring they leave College with confidence and maturity, well-prepared for Higher Education and employment.
Behaviour and Attitudes: Outstanding
Students at Winstanley College display exemplary behaviour and attitudes towards their studies. Ofsted inspectors found that students are highly motivated, diligent, and eager to excel. The report describes the College as “welcoming, inclusive, caring and friendly,” with students feeling respected and supported. Education Programmes for Young People: Outstanding
Winstanley College provides a broad and ambitious curriculum designed to meet the needs of students. The report states: “Teachers are experts in adapting their teaching based on students assessment results.” Teaching is well-structured, and students benefit from regular assessments, targeted support, and expert guidance to help them achieve their academic and career aspirations.
Provision for Learners with High Needs: Outstanding
Students with high needs receive exceptional support, allowing them to excel. The report states: “Teachers use detailed information to plan individualised learning that helps these students to achieve at least as well as, and often better than, their peers.” The College’s commitment to accessibility and tailored support ensures that every student can succeed.

Leadership and Management: Outstanding
Ofsted praised the leadership of Winstanley College, noting that leaders and managers are ambitious for students and committed to continuous improvement. They ensure teachers receive regular professional development and make effective use of quality assurance processes. Governors were commended for their active role in supporting and challenging College leaders to maintain high standards.
