Extracurricular

Our excellent programme of extra-curricular activities has been designed to ensure you have the opportunity to bring your learning to life; broaden your horizons; meet new friends and explore – or discover – your favourite hobbies or pastimes. The extra-curricular programme is for all students and you don't have to study the relevant subject to participate. Below are some activities on offer:

Anime and Manga Club

Anime and Manga are two popular forms of Japanese visual media with a global fanbase. If you are part of this fanbase, or if you want to learn more, you are very welcome to attend Anime and Manga Club where you can discuss books, films and artwork.

Biology and Photography Competition

Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a wildlife photographer? The Biology Photography Competition gives you the opportunity to find out by exploring the world around you. A keen photographer can submit photos of wildlife, anywhere in the world. Students vote for their favourite photograph and a prize is awarded to the top photographs.

Board Games Club

If you enjoy Settlers of Catan or Monopoly then you can join board games club and play at lunchtime with other fellow board games fans. You can bring your own boardgames or you can borrow them from College.

Chess Club

Do you know the difference between the Sicilian or French defence or are you a beginner who is wanting to learn how to play? If so, you are very welcome to join Chess Club where you can play both against your peers or a computer.

College Musical

Every year College puts on an all singing, all dancing musical that anyone who wants to can audition for. Examples of former productions include Rock of Ages, The Little Mermaid, The Addams Family, Hairspray and We Will Rock You.

Colouring Club

Colouring is a very popular art form that is accessible to all students. Come along if you want to have go.

Costume Club

Costume Club is for anyone who has an interest in fashion and fashion design. Come along and show your creative flare by making costumes for the Winstanley College fashion show or musical.

Crafternoon

If you enjoy crafting and making things you can take part in a crafternoon where there will be a range of activities such as, knitting to origami. There is something for everyone who wants to hone their skills or try a new craft.

Creative Writing

Are you a budding novelist or poet? If so, come along to Creative Writing Club to find out about the structure of different types of writing, how to set the scene and how to develop new characters.

Dungeons and Dragons Club

Dungeons and Dragons is a popular game of imagination, fantasy and storytelling that lets you create your own fantasy world and characters. Students meet each week to take part in their adventures.

FIFA Club

If you love playing FIFA, you can do it at College too. In FIFA CLub students meet up to play together, make new friends and take part in tournaments.

French Film Club

'Aimes-tu les films?' If you answered 'oui' to that question, then you should join French Film Club. The club meets weekly to watch French cinema films to give you a chance to practice your French listening and find out more about French culture.

Henna Club

The art of Henna—called mehndi in Hindi and Urdu—has been practised in Pakistan, India, Africa, and the Middle East for over 5000 years. It was originally used for its natural cooling properties for the people living in hot desert climates. This gives you the opportunity to try out different Henna designs and even get your own Henna tattoo.

K-Pop

At Winstanley College- There is a big fanbase for K-Pop who meet to dance to and discuss Korean Pop, which is a form of popular music originating in South Korea.

Law, Philosophy and Politics Film Club

In this club you will watch films as a primary source of knowledge to facilitate discussion of topics that relate to Law, Philosophy and politics. You will discover how thousands of people's day to day lives are shaped by their beliefs and how this is considered in politics and law making.

Mandarin

After English, Mandarin is the most commonly spoken language in the world. This allows you the opportunity to learn Mandarin and practise speaking to your friends in Mandarin as part of the session

NFL CLub

Students who are fans of American Football join together to discuss games, transfers and their own fatasy football league.

Mindful Art Meditation

A quiet space where you can colour in art mandalas and other shapes, while listening to relaxing meditation music and experience the aroma of essential oils. Open to all students this is an aopportunity in your busy day to slow down and take a moment of quiet relaxation.

Progression Workshops

On Progression Day every subject puts on activities to help you make the transition to university, apprenticeships or employment. This can involve visits from University staff, Alumni and local businesses.

Russian Club

Are you a linguist who has always wanted to extend your language knowledge? If so you can join Russian Club. In Russian Club, you will learn to speak Russian and practice your conversational Russian skills with your classmates.

The Big Knit

If you are an avid knitter and want to take part in the national charity event the Big Knit, in which you knit hats for Innocent smoothie bottles to raise money for charity, you can join other like minded knitters to do this on a Wednesday lunchtime during the spring term. The Big Knit raises money for Age UK and is really important to help the charity to keep supporting elderly people.

The Hub (Computer Science)

Every week any student who is interested in video games can learn what it takes to make them. The Hub also includes a very popular chess club where you can try your best chess moves against your peers.

Typing Club

Many students need to type for their controlled assessments or coursework but typing speed can sometimes slow progress down. In this enrichment activity, you can hone your touch-typing skills improving your speed and accuracy, so your coursework will be done faster and you'll have less editing to do.

Trivia Club

Do you like University Challenge, Only Connect or Trivia Pursuits? If so, come along to Trivia Club where you can take part in quizzes and share your top trivia facts with fellow students.
