Congratulations to Maria Covasa who has been highly commended in a flash fiction competition, run by The University of Oxford.

Maria who studies Maths, Further Maths, Biology and Chemistry, has had an interest in Spanish since studying it at GCSE and has kept up with learning the language outside of college.

The competition challenged entrants to write a story in French or Spanish of fewer than 100 words.

Maria, inspired by the recent solar eclipse in the USA, chose to use an extended metaphor imagining the sun and moon were people who could never meet.

Her work impressed the judges and Maria was presented with a certificate for her efforts.

Maria, who previously attended Moorside High School who hopes to apply to Cambridge University next year to study Medicine, commented: ‘I love studying languages and enjoyed the chance to practise by Spanish skills in this competition. Being highly commended was just a bonus!’
