Racing Towards a Dream
By Tom Cannon, Lower Sixth student and Team Brit driver
I first fell in love with racing when I was just eight years old, tearing around the indoor karting tracks at Daytona in Manchester and later at TeamSport in Warrington. There was something about the speed, the focus, and the precision that completely captivated me. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to go further.
I worked hard to progress from karting to simulators. My mum bought me a voucher for a Ginetta simulator experience, and that opened the door to something incredible — the Ginetta Junior Scholarship. Out of 70 drivers, I made it to the final. That was a huge moment for me.
To take things to the next level, I completed my senior ARDS test with The Motorsport School in Leicester, earning my racing licence and the ability to compete against adult drivers. I even spent my 16th birthday at Oulton Park, behind the wheel of a Fiesta ST — not your average birthday celebration!
One of the most inspiring parts of my journey so far has been discovering Team BRIT. I first met them at a race at Silverstone and was instantly drawn to their ethos and energy. I arranged a test with them and have since driven at Oulton Park, Donington, and Brands Hatch. I’m now hoping to join the team next season, racing in their BMW 1 Series.
Team BRIT is incredible. They have a fleet of McLarens and BMWs, and their drivers are some of the most inspirational people I’ve ever met. Some of them use hand controls to race — they’re paraplegic following motorcycle accidents — and yet they compete alongside able-bodied drivers in high-performance cars. It’s amazing to witness.
Being autistic gives me a unique perspective behind the wheel. I’m detail-driven, focused, and thrive in structured, high-pressure environments — all of which help me stay calm and consistent on track. Racing feels like home.
My dream is to become the first autistic racing driver to win Le Mans.
Right now, I’m looking for sponsors — especially local businesses — who want to partner with me to raise funds for next season and help promote diversity in motorsport. It’s not just about racing; it’s about showing what’s possible when you follow your passion and believe in yourself.
