This week, we catch up with former Winstanley student Jesse Seyi, who attended College after being home educated. At Winstanley, Jesse studied BTEC IT Diploma, achieving D* D*, alongside A-Level Business Studies, achieving an A grade.

After College, Jesse progressed onto a BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions degree apprenticeship with Manchester Metropolitan University, alongside working as an Apprentice Integration Developer at Manchester City Council. During his time at College, opportunities for in-person work experience were limited following the pandemic, so he completed several virtual work experience programmes with organisations including Vodafone, Fujitsu and Springpod. These experiences helped develop his understanding of the technology sector, software development and different career pathways within the industry.

Jesse is currently working as an Apprentice Integration Developer at Manchester City Council, where he mainly works as a backend developer. His role involves designing, building, testing and maintaining systems that allow different software systems to share data and support the delivery of council services. One recent highlight involved helping to automate the council’s refund process, improving efficiency for both residents and staff. Alongside his technical role, Jesse has also supported wider council initiatives, including volunteering at a food bank, working at a polling station during the general election and helping promote council services to residents.

Reflecting on his journey, Jesse encourages students to focus on enjoying the learning process rather than only chasing grades. He reminds students that learning takes time, mistakes are part of the process and support is always available. He also encourages students interested in software development to take time to fully understand problems before rushing into coding, explaining that planning, communication and organisation are just as important as technical skills.

Thanks for sharing your story, Jesse, and for inspiring future Winstanley students.
