Throwback Thursday: Emaan Baloch
Back
This week for our Throwback Thursday alumni feature, we catch up with former student Emaan Baloch, who attended Winstanley College from 2024 to 2026. Studying Biology, Chemistry, Maths and an EPQ, Emaan combined academic success with a wide range of enrichment opportunities that helped prepare her for her next step. She is now about to begin studying Medicine at Keele University as she works towards her ambition of becoming a doctor.
Emaan said: “Before joining Winstanley College, I attended St John Fisher Catholic High School in Wigan.
At College, I studied Biology, Chemistry, Maths and an EPQ. Alongside my studies, I took part in a wide range of enrichment activities, including Sign Language, Biology Book Club, Operation Diagnosis, the Chemistry and Biology Olympiads, the UKMT Maths Challenge and the HE+ Programme. I also enjoyed supporting College events as a Student Ambassador and Student Union Associate for Equality and Diversity.
I was able to take part in several university visits and educational trips, including taster days at Edge Hill University and Lancaster University, as well as a Biology trip to Brockholes.
I am about to start as a first-year medical student at Keele University. To support my application, I completed work experience at Wigan Hospital, where I shadowed doctors and sat in on consultations. I also volunteered in a care home, helping residents with activities and providing support to staff.
My goal is to become a doctor and make a positive difference to people's lives.
My advice to future Winstanley College students is not to be afraid to ask for help. The staff are incredibly supportive, and there is no such thing as a stupid question.
For students looking to follow a career in medicine, I would recommend starting early when searching for volunteering and work experience opportunities, as these can take time to secure. It is also important to have hobbies and interests outside of your studies to help you relax and maintain a healthy balance.
My final piece of advice would be to get involved in as much enrichment as possible. It is a great way to develop new skills, meet people and make the most of your time at College, while still remembering to make time for yourself too.”
