Winstanley College Theatre Studies students have been selected to perform a new play at the 2022 National Theatre Connections Festival.

The students were selected from over 500 entries and will perform ‘Cable Street’ on 28th June at London’s National Theatre on a professional stage.

The play, by Lisa Goldman, is about two girls growing up in London’s Jewish east end in the 1930s. Leah and Kitty are blood sisters, best friends and more but they get caught up in the political turmoil caused by Oswald Mosley’s fascist Blackshirts.

John R. Wilkinson, Associate Director from the National Theatre, visited college yesterday to support students in their dress rehearsal and offer advice ahead of the main performance.

College tutor, Lisa Baty, said: ‘We are so proud of our students and the hard work they have put into this incredible achievement. Many of them have never had experience of performing to a live audience, and NT Connections has allowed them not only to do this but to develop their skills as actors and devisers of theatre.’
