Winstanley College student elected for Youth Parliament

A lower sixth student from Winstanley College has been elected as a UK Youth Parliament Representative.

At just 16 years old, Layan Hassan, who is studying for A-levels in Politics, Law, and Sociology, already has experience of leading a successful campaign, having previously been elected as BAME leader by the British Youth Council.

Layan, who is a former pupil of Hawkley Hall High School, centred her Youth Parliament campaign around inequality, diversity, and inclusivity, and showcased her passion for implementing change in young people’s lives.

Now elected, Layan has already met with the mayor and young people to consult on issues such as mental health. She will also be invited to debate in The House of Commons and meet with other organisations such as Greater Manchester Youth Combined Authority and Youth Focus NW.

Layan commented: ‘I believe young people are the future and they have so much potential to change the world! I encourage young people to contact me about my campaign, and to have their views represented in Parliament. I’m excited to see what the future holds for me in this amazing opportunity.’
