On Friday, 21st November, Winstanley College welcomed Clare Lombardelli, Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, for an extraordinary economics event that brought together Winstanley students and pupils from local schools for an unforgettable learning experience.

This unique initiative, delivered in partnership with the Bank of England and the Financial Times financial literacy charity FLIC, offered an unprecedented opportunity for young people to gain insight into how economics shapes everyday life. Through interactive discussions and real-world examples, students explored the vital role economics plays in decision-making at both personal and national levels.

Clare Lombardelli commented:
“It was fantastic to meet so many engaged and curious students. Economics is about understanding the world around us, and events like this help young people see how the decisions we make every day—whether as individuals, businesses, or policymakers—shape the economy and their futures.”

Helen Gordon, Head of Economics at Winstanley College, added:
“Having the Deputy Governor here was an incredible privilege. The session was tailored to make economics accessible and relevant, and it truly inspired our students to think critically about the world around them.”

Students were equally enthusiastic, with Louis Verron, Year 13 Economics student commenting: “It really helped me understand how the economy affects things like prices and jobs, Meeting someone from the Bank of England made economics feel real and exciting.”

The event reflects Winstanley College’s commitment to providing exceptional opportunities that broaden horizons and prepare students for future success.
