Earth Science Pathways
Back
Recently, the Earth Science Department were fortunate enough to host a presentation from Dr Clayton Magill an Associate Professor of Biochemistry at Heriot Watt University. Clayton is a world leader in biogeochemistry but fundamentally regards himself as a geographer as he researches the carbon cycle, sustainability and paleoenvironments to name a few.
His enthusiasm for geography is inspiring. He shared his story and background with our students, showing that it is possible to overcome any obstacles in life, and that there is always time to learn and progress. His wide and varied career emphasised the importance of the role of geography in society today. From his work in sustainability related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, land-ocean connections in the organic carbon cycle, and his opportunity to travel around the world supporting research and development. He demonstrated to our students that geography bring endless possibilities. One example of research he shared was ‘Could YOU survive on bugs?’ involving a visit to Tanzania where he spent one month living on bugs following an archaeological excavation demonstrating evidence of the past that is still in action today.
We would like to thank Dr Clayton Magill for sharing his experience with our students and for his continued offer of support.
