This week’s Throwback Thursday shines a spotlight on former Winstanley student Jess, whose creative journey began right here on our Art & Design Foundation course back in 2008/09. From exploring her artistic identity at College to teaching and designing professionally, Jess’s path is a brilliant example of where a strong creative foundation can lead.

“I went to Bishop Rawstorne High School before joining Winstanley. I studied the Art & Design Foundation in 2008/09, which gave me the chance to explore so many different creative areas. One of the highlights of my time at Winstanley was the incredible trip to China — an experience I’ll never forget.

After College, I went on to study Embroidery (BA Hons) at the Manchester School of Art. During my degree, I had the chance to develop specialised skills and immerse myself in creative projects that helped shape my future direction.

I’m now a part‑time tutor on the Textile in Practice course at Manchester School of Art, which I absolutely love. Alongside this, I work as a freelance designer, creating fabric and wallpaper designs.

In the future, I’d like to continue developing my skills in working with students and sharing creative experiences. Teaching has become a really meaningful part of my career.

To anyone thinking of coming to Winstanley: it’s a fantastic experience and a chance to really understand the different areas of Art & Design. The College has such a friendly and supportive team of staff who encouraged me to explore my creative skills. I actually joined Art Foundation not knowing if I truly wanted a career in the creative industry — but after a few months, everything changed. The staff helped guide my degree choices and opened my eyes to all the different ways I could use my creativity.

If you want to follow a similar career pathway, you absolutely can do it! Be prepared to work on lots of different projects before you get to your dream ones. Take every opportunity, and speak to people who have followed a similar route — their insight can really help.

For anyone considering Manchester School of Art, especially the Textile course, you’ll find great staff and amazing facilities and technicians. It’s a brilliant place to grow as an artist.”
