Helen Gordon, Head of Business, Economics and Accounting at Winstanley College, recently attended a special centenary lecture at the University of Oxford celebrating the life and work of economist Francis Ysidro Edgeworth.

The lecture revisited Edgeworth’s famous ideas, including his work “Inside the Box”, the development of indifference curves, and his analysis of tariffs and their wider impact. Although these concepts were developed over a century ago, the discussion showed just how relevant they remain in helping us understand markets, trade and consumer behaviour today.

The event was a fantastic opportunity to engage with leading academics and explore how classic economic theory continues to shape modern policy and debate. It also provided Winstanley College with the chance to further strengthen its links with Oxford’s Economics Faculty.

Reflecting on the visit, Helen commented on the value of staying connected to cutting-edge scholarship to ensure students benefit from rich discussion, strong analytical foundations and a deeper understanding of the world around them
