Winstanley College’s Sheila Wilding Shortlisted for National “Unsung Hero” Award
Back
Winstanley College is delighted to announce that Sheila Wilding, our long‑serving Lead Cleaner, has been named a finalist in the ‘Unsung Hero’ category at The Pearson National Teaching Awards 2026.
Sheila has been an integral part of Winstanley College since 1995, and her nomination recognises more than three decades of outstanding service, leadership and devotion to our community.
Sheila is widely regarded as one of the most exceptional managers within the College. She sets the highest possible standards for herself and her team, always leading by example. Whether ensuring classrooms and social spaces are spotless or preparing the campus for major events, Sheila approaches every task with dedication, pride and remarkable attention to detail. She never hesitates to roll up her sleeves, and she never leaves a job until it is done to perfection.
Beyond her exceptional work ethic, Sheila is known across the College for the warmth and positivity she brings to every interaction. One staff member summed up a sentiment shared by many: “Every time I see her, she makes me smile.”
Another colleague captured why Sheila is so deserving of this recognition:
“Sheila embodies everything that makes someone an unsung hero: quiet strength, compassion and a selfless ability to lift others when they need it most.”
We are incredibly proud to see Sheila’s contribution recognised on a national stage.
Winstanley College will be celebrating Sheila — and all our staff — on National Thank a Teacher Day, taking place on Wednesday 17 June 2026, when the winners of this year’s awards will be announced.
