Take your music production journey to the next level with our BTEC Diploma in Digital Music & Audio Production, a dynamic, two A-level equivalent course designed for aspiring producers, sound engineers, and audio creatives who want to go further and dig deeper into the world of creative audio design.

This course will give you access to a wider range of projects, skills, and specialisms – combining hands-on studio practice with cutting-edge sound design, remixing, and media audio production. It's the perfect launchpad for further study in the creative industries. 

What will I study?

This course includes everything from the Extended Certificate, plus a whole lot more: 

  • Studio Recording & Production – Capture, shape and mix professional audio using industry tools and techniques. 
  • Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) – Master industry software (Cubase) to compose, edit, and produce original tracks to craft original music tracks and soundscapes. 
  • Live Sound Engineering – Work as part of a crew to set up, run, and deliver live events. 
  • Sound for Media – Compose, design, and produce audio for film, games, and digital content – where music meets storytelling. 
  • Synthesis & Sampling – Dive into the world of sound design, building your own instruments and textures from scratch. 
  • Remixing & Reworking – Learn how to reinterpret and transform tracks using creative production techniques. 
  • Music Technology in Context – Explore the history and evolution of music tech, and how it shapes the sounds of today. 
  • Music Theory for Producers – Understand the building blocks of music and how to apply them in your own productions. 

Which exam board and how will I be assessed?

Work will be assessed using a combination of internal assessments, which are set and marked by teachers, and external assessments which are set and marked by Pearson: 

  • mandatory units have a combination of internal and external assessments 
  • all optional units are internally assessed. 

Where could it take me?

From scoring short films to remixing tracks, working in sound for games, or producing your own EP, this course gives you the foundation and freedom to specialise, experiment, and excel. 

Subject combinations

The course combines very well with a vast range of creative subjects such as all Art courses, Media and Theatre Studies. If you are looking to pursue music at a conservatoire or university, this course will combine well with A-level Music and/or Music Performance. 

What support is available?

The course is housed in the state-of-the-art media and performing arts centre. Music Technology is taught in a large DAW suite, with laptops available for mobile study all of which contain access to industry standard software packages. The music department also offers a second large music classroom, two practice rooms, a band room and two dedicated professional digital recording studios. All of which are soundproofed and fully equipped with access to excellent audio hardware and software. 

What extracurricular activities are available?

Trips and visits have included visiting The British Music Experience and Ronnie Scott’s in London along with trips to see the orchestra in Manchester. Students have recently visited top recording studios in London where they were allowed exclusive access to state-of-the-art facilities and expertise. Regular visits from industry professionals are a feature, providing students with up to date inside knowledge. We put on a range of concerts and musicals each year and encourage students to get involved as sound engineers, performers, conductors and technicians.
