Caitlin Lyth

Professional Policing degree at Edge Hill University

Back

This week for our Throwback Thursday alumni feature, we catch up with former student Caitlin Lyth, who attended Winstanley College from 2024 to 2026. After studying A-level Dance, A-level Psychology and the Level 3 Diploma in Criminology, Caitlin is now preparing to begin a Professional Policing degree at Edge Hill University. During her time at College, she embraced a wide range of enrichment opportunities, gained valuable work experience and developed ambitions to build a career in policing or working with children.

Caitlin said: “Before joining Winstanley College, I attended Urmston Grammar School. At College, I studied A-level Dance, A-level Psychology and the Level 3 Diploma in Criminology between 2024 and 2026.

I made the most of the opportunities available through the Dance department and took part in all dance enrichment activities, including dance shows, performances and workshops. These experiences helped me develop both my confidence and my performance skills.

I was also able to take part in some fantastic educational trips during my time at College. I visited Lancaster University for a taster session and attended a criminology trip to the University of Central Lancashire, where we took part in a policing taster session. During the visit, we were able to explore the crime houses and take part in a range of practical activities, which gave me a real insight into the profession.

I am about to start a Professional Policing degree at Edge Hill University and am looking forward to taking the next step towards my future career. Alongside my studies, I will continue working part-time as a waitress in a pub and restaurant, balancing university life with employment.

In the future, I would love to become a detective or work with children in some capacity, whether that is within a crime-related role or in a primary school supporting children with special educational needs.

My advice to future Winstanley College students would be to make the most of your free periods from the very beginning. Use some of that time to create revision resources and stay organised, but also make sure you enjoy spending time with your friends before the pressure of exams increases.

Winstanley College is an incredible College with amazing, supportive teachers and so many opportunities for everyone. I met some of my best friends at Winstanley College and will forever be grateful for that.”
